Man United beats Blackburn for 10th straight win

LONDON (AP): Manchester United strengthened its hold on first place in the Premier League with a 10th straight victory, beating visiting Blackburn 2-1 Saturday.

Although Roque Santa Cruz ended United's record run of 14 league games without conceding a goal, Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo scored to take the defending champions to 62 points - eight more than Liverpool, which hosts Manchester City on Sunday.

Chelsea moved above Aston Villa and into third place after Nicolas Anelka scored in the 19th minute at Villa Park to give Guus Hiddink a victory in his first match as manager. Fifth-place Arsenal failed to take full advantage of Villa's slip up when it drew 0-0 with visiting Sunderland for a third straight scoreless draw in the Premier League.

Blackburn had just come close to a 2-1 lead at Old Trafford when Ronaldo, who had moments earlier received a yellow card for diving, struck a curling free kick into the far corner.

That 60th-minute goal took his season tally to 12 in the Premier League.

"We gave away a really bad goal when you consider the way we defended the past 10 weeks," United manager Alex Ferguson said. "They made it a real fight for us.

Sometimes when you don't play your very best you get a result like that and go on to win the title."

Rooney had put United ahead in the 23rd minute, scoring in his fourth straight Premier League game for the first time, but Santa Cruz made it 1-1 nine minutes later when he took the ball past the goalkeeper and slipped it into the net from an acute angle.

United, though, started with reserve 'keeper Tomasz Kuszczak, so first-choice Edwin van der Sar can still stretch his British record of 1,302 minutes without conceding.

United defender Jonny Evans appeared unlucky to have a first-half header ruled out because of a push in the area and Blackburn almost took the lead in the 59th when Keith Andrews hit the post and Kuszczak smothered a follow-up shot by Ryan Nelson to ensure United stays undefeated in the league since Nov. 8.

"What happened today is a good reminder that we have to fight for our lives," Ferguson said.

Liverpool can trim the gap back to five points with victory on Sunday, although captain Steven Gerrard will miss the match injured. Everton is at Newcastle and last-place West Bromwich Albion is at Fulham in Sunday's other matches.

Anelka scored his 15th league goal of the season to end Villa's 13-match unbeaten run and possibly push Chelsea back into contention for the title it last won in 2006.

England midfielder Frank Lampard slipped between two opponents to release a perfectly weighted pass that the France striker chipped over goalkeeper Brad Friedel.

"I am satisfied with the performance and the result, especially against a team like Villa who have had a very good record recently," said Hiddink, who is in charge until the end of the season. "They have not been beaten in the league for a long time.

"In the first half we were very dominant and the only criticism is that we did not finish the game off."

Arsenal appears only to be concerned with making it back into the top four and retaining its place in next season's Champions League after its result left it on 45 points, six fewer than Villa and seven fewer than Chelsea.

The Gunners started with record signing Andrei Arshavin in the team for the first time but the Russia playmaker was substituted with 27 minutes left. His replacement, Carlos Vela, almost had an impact when he sent a cross into the area but no teammate could get the touch that would almost certainly have led to a goal.

Goalkeeper Marton Fulop saved a free kick by Robin van Persie before Arsenal was jeered from the field by its fans.

Sunderland has now stopped the opposition from scoring in two straight games for the first time in six years to earn another point in its efforts to edge away from the relegation zone.

Sunderland has 31 points, just putting it in the top half of the standings, eight points above the relegation zone.

Middlesbrough stayed 19th and deep in trouble after a 0-0 draw with visiting Wigan that left it with just one goal in nine league matches, while Stoke was one place above the relegation zone with 25 points after a 2-2 draw with visiting Portsmouth.

Tottenham also has 25 points and is at Hull in Monday's match.

Bolton scored twice in two first-half minutes to secure a 2-1 win over West Ham. Matthew Taylor and Kevin Davies scored for the home side, while Scott Parker replied for the Hammers in the 66th.

Birmingham missed the chance to draw level on points with leader Wolverhampton Wanderers in the second-tier League Championship when it lost at Coventry 1-0.

Bristol City vaulted up three places to fourth after a 2-0 win at third-place Reading.

Glory Man United Glory.....

LONDON, Feb 16 — Such is the speed and breathtaking movement of Manchester United that the Red Devils almost resemble the Red Arrows. Nani, Cristiano Ronaldo and Ryan Giggs all flew around Pride Park yesterday afternoon, leaving Derby County choking on their vapour trails.

Giggs, all touch and vision, was again magnificent. Nani and Ronaldo, such elusive scarlet pimpernels, both scored while United’s phenomenal strength in depth was confirmed in well-taken goals by Darron Gibson and Danny Welbeck. Amid all this shimmering beauty lurked a real ruthlessness. United fans are loving it. They had clearly been busy with the sewing machines, creating banners to go with their chants. All singers and songs, United’s following filled the South Stand with messages, saluting everyone from Carlos Tevez to Nemanja Vidic. “The fans were fantastic,” said Sir Alex Ferguson.

One banner stood out – “Marching to Wembley”. If they win at either Swansea or Fulham in the quarter-finals, United will be guaranteed another Wembley appearance to go with their Carling Cup outing (as the FA Cup semis are staged under the famous arch).

United’s vaulting ambitions appears unstoppable. Nigel Clough’s Derby, neat and nimble in their new master’s image, performed well despite the painful-looking scoreline. They have now struck four times against United in 39 days, a miracle as no Premier League side has breached the champions’ backline since Nov 8, yet they have nothing but pride to show for their energetic labours.

Ferguson’s men were simply a class apart. Clough even suggested “it is possible” that United could lift the Champions League and the three domestic trophies because of the “quality” and depth of their squad.

Gibson was just starting school in Derry when Giggs began weaving his magic in a red shirt, and the young midfielder impressed in the centre here. “Gibson did really well,” said Ferguson. “He has got into the Carling Cup final team with that performance.”

Ben Foster exuded calm in goal, making some good clearances, and having no chance with Miles Addison’s second-half header. Welbeck raced on and scored as United made light of Tevez remaining on the bench and Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov staying at home. “Welbeck is a natural finisher,” added Ferguson.

Clough smiled ruefully afterwards when asked how a manager could prepare for opponents blessed with so many options. “It’s almost impossible,” said the Derby manager. “Giggs has played wide [against West Ham], central midfield [against Chelsea] and through the middle [yesterday]!”

Giggs was partnered by Ronaldo, whose acceleration constantly worried Clough’s centre-halves, Addison and Martin Albrechtsen. “He’s an option for us as a striker but I prefer him as a winger,” said Ferguson of Ronaldo. “He gets so many goals from the wide areas, and we’ve got Tevez, Berbatov and Rooney (in the centre).”

Even with so many understudies in the United ensemble, a familiar drama was again staged — the turning of the screw. Outclassed, Derby were far from overawed, Robbie Savage quickly lecturing Ronaldo for going down too easily under one of his challenges. Savage loved this tussle, yet Ronaldo was almost untouchable at times.

United’s threat grew and only Stephen Bywater’s reflexes kept them at bay. First he saved from Darren Fletcher, then Ji-sung Park. Yet Derby gave their noisy fans plenty to sing about. Kris Commons buzzed about. Rob Hulse volleyed over and then appealed in vain for a penalty when challenged by Rio Ferdinand. The eye kept being drawn back to Giggs, 35 going on 25. Awarded a new one-year contract, Giggs would certainly not have been flattered by a three-year deal on this vibrant evidence. He helped make United’s first, combining with Park, Gibson and Fletcher to set up Nani, whose 20-yarder flashed past Bywater.

A font of creativity, Giggs then flicked a pass through the middle for Ronaldo to chase and swiftly pace past Bywater. As United celebrated, the linesman Paul Tierney signalled to the referee Alan Wiley and a brief pow-wow broke out. Tierney asked Wiley whether Giggs had touched the ball, which he had so the linesman insisted that Ronaldo was offside. Strange. Jordan Stewart appeared to have played him on.

No matter. United soon had their second. When a Ronaldo free-kick bounced kindly off the Derby wall to Gibson, the midfielder sent it racing past Bywater. Wiley should have ruled this one out as Rafael, running across the box, interfered with the keeper’s vision.

United were really flying now, adding a third shortly after the break. When Stewart, trying to shepherd the ball away from Park, needlessly conceded a corner, United took full advantage. As Giggs curled the ball over, Ferdinand’s decoy run created space. Ronaldo darted in and headed powerfully past Bywater. For a while, United put on the Ritz, Ronaldo even attempting to score with a back-heel from 15 yards. All the while, Giggs’ passing touched the sublime. Derby refused to bow out meekly. Gary Teale began creating trouble down the left, lifting in a cross that Foster did well to punch away. United’s keeper was beaten after 55 minutes. When Savage stroked the ball down the right, Commons crossed for Addison to place his header wide of Foster.

Any thoughts of a Derby comeback were always going to be far-fetched, particularly with Giggs directing operations for United. The Welshman conducted a one-two with Fletcher on the edge of the area and Welbeck applied the coup de grace.

United’s attention now turn to the Premier League. The champions will go five points clear if they defeat Fulham. “Everyone will be ready for Wednesday,” said Ferguson. “I rested Tevez with that game in mind. Rooney should be ready for Saturday — it might be Wednesday but definitely Saturday.” Who can catch football’s Red Arrows? — The Straits Times
